Week 02 - Entry 02

The way my group and I are finding inspiration for our folk game is thinking back to points in our childhood where we may have played games like these without realizing what they were. Thinking back to recess in elementary or something like a summer camp is a great place to start in order to brainstorm ideas for an original folk game.

The research is quite simple, as you are just thinking back to a time in which you had fun playing a game, but it can also be taken farther if you wish to compare it to other games in order to make small, yet entertaining changes to the original game. I have not had the chance to fully discuss the game we are thinking of doing with my group, since I was not in class when the assignment was talked about, however I believe that I have some interesting concepts that could be implemented into a variety of games.

When Sicart writes in the notes that "play gives people a chance to shape the world" it gives me the idea of modding games to our liking. Whether we mean to or not, we all make changes to commonly played games around the world based on our culture or who we play with. The first example that comes to mind is Uno. Although it is not a folkgame (or is it?), the rules have been altered around the world when it comes to stacking +2 and +4 cards. I know many different people that play the game in many different ways because it is what they have always done. This is why I am excited to "shape the world" of our games in class on Tuesday.
